Communicating Expectations

The unit began with a rubric for the unit, containing the major objectives students were expected to meet. These gave students immediate idea of what they needed and why it was important.

Engagement Through Application

Students were engaged throughout the unit as the content was tied to things important to them. For example, part of the unit dealt with what COVID-19 is and how, based on its life cycle and the body systems it impacts, precautions could be made.

Accountability and Formative Assessment

For any individualized work, my students prefer if I would stamp their paper as they complete the activity. Additionally, built-in activities like whiteboard checks and card sorts helped the students solidify their learning and provide me with immediate feedback on their progress.

Agency and Ownership

The major points to the students were expressed via inquiry. Students were provided data or information about the viruses and made their own conclusions about the data. This mimics the scientific process. Additionally, students had the opportunity to create a product based off the information they learned, such as the image to the right.

Lesson Summaries

Every lesson ends with some form of exit ticket. This way, students get to contextualize all of the pieces they have learned into one overall idea. Additionally, this gives myself feedback on how effective I was as a teacher.
